Round 2: Targeted Free Home Lighting Upgrades

Last month twelve West Union households took advantage of Green Up West Union’s “Bright Box” program.  The Bright Box giveaway is a first-come, first-serve program, offering free home lighting upgrades to qualifying West Union residents.  The program is available for West Union residents and are a low to moderate-income household, a veteran, a senior citizen aged 65 or up, or living with a disability.
“We have 8-10 more Bright Boxes to giveaway to West Union households,” says Joleen Jansen with the Green Up West Union Project.

West Union resident Steve Alcorn is already benefiting from the Bright Box.  He received a message from Moss Roofing, his landlord. “All I had to do was call the number, and three days later, they rang the doorbell, and my box was there,” says Alcorn. Steve installed the bulbs, and says the process was easy,  and above all, he is looking forward to spending less on his energy bills. “Every little bit helps,” he said.

LED lighting is 75 times more efficient and lasts up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent lights. According to Energy.gov, “By replacing your home’s five most frequently used light fixtures or bulbs with models that have earned the ENERGY STAR, you can save $75 each year.”

“We try to push the idea that saving energy costs is as easy as installing a light bulb. Why spend more to power your lighting. Nobody ever says oh, I really enjoy my lighting that costs more and does not last as long,” says Jansen

The custom-packed box of LED lights will contain lights for each light socket in the home. These LED lighting transitions save on average annually $120
